What is Oolong Tea?
Oolong Tea is made from the bigger leaves found at the bottom of the tea bush, Camellia Sinensis. While it heralds from the same plant as Green Tea, Black Tea, and White Tea, the processing methods used on the leaves that make Oolong Tea mean that the flavours, strength, caffeine content, and colouring differ greatly. There are many different types of Oolong, but they all share a smooth, creamy, earthy taste & flavour.
Oolong Tea is said to be good for gut health and your metabolism. All we know is that it’s good for your wallet as you can rebrew this tea many times so one serving can last you all day!
Why is Oolong the perfect tummy tea?
Oolong leaves are only partly oxidised so their processing is somewhere between Green Tea, which isn’t oxidised at all, and Black Tea, which is fully oxidised. This means you get a slow release of caffeine which, mixed with the antioxidant content in the tea leaves, activates good gut bacteria to aid your digestive system & provide lots of health benefits. Does Oolong have caffeine?
Yes, Oolong Tea does contain caffeine. Black Tea, White Tea, and Green Tea are all plucked from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis, but due to the different methods of processing they have different levels of caffeine content. The process of withering and rolling the Oolong Tea leaves but only partly oxidising them means it has more caffeine content than Green Tea but with a slower release than Black Tea.
How to brew Oolong?
Our Tea Mixology experts recommend using 1 Perfect Teaspoon of an Oolong Tea blend, and brewing it for a maximum of 3 minutes in 80° water (any hotter and you may burn the leaves which results in a bitter taste!).
